Issues
Education has long been the cornerstone of our free society. Recently, it has been the first place the government looks to cut. President Franklin Roosevelt once said: “The school is the last expenditure upon which America should be willing to economize.” We need to give our administrators, teachers and students the resources and tools they need to be successful.
We need to lobby state government for a different funding system. One that is not derived from the general fund of the state. State of California General Funds come from tax revenues that are based upon income, sales and property taxes. High unemployment, a shrinking economy and a real estate market gone bust all spell disaster for education.
To help our schools in the short term, we need to rally behind foundations such as the McSwain Education Foundation which can fill some of the gaps left by the state. In addition, we need to find other creative ways to support our schools financially to help them return to their status as the best in America.
